Pick the edition for your host first

Sapphire is Boris FX's plug-in suite of “more than 270 effects and transitions and more than 3,000 professionally designed presets”. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Boris FX sells it in three license types, and each one covers a different set of host applications. Choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake, so start here.

Boris FX's advice for the middle case: “Editors who work across Avid and Adobe or OFX typically choose the Multi-host license.” If you only use Resolve, the Adobe/OFX license already covers it.

Every perpetual license “includes a complimentary 12-month Upgrade and Support Plan”, which gives you all Sapphire updates released during those 12 months plus phone and email support. After that, Boris FX says “Perpetual licenses remain fully functional after the Upgrade and Support Plan expires”; renewing the plan is what you pay for later updates. Boris FX also sells monthly and annual subscriptions, which cost less up front; we only offer the perpetual editions.

One key, one workstation, no transfers

Two rules decide what a genuine Sapphire license looks like:

  • One active computer per key. Boris FX's help centre says a nodelocked license “allows the Boris FX software to be activated on one particular computer at a time” and that “When you purchase a nodelocked license, you will be emailed an activation key.” You can install Sapphire on as many computers as you like and move the license by deactivating it on one machine and activating it on another.
  • No resale without consent. Section 2 of the Boris FX license agreement grants “a non-transferable, nonexclusive license”, and section 10 says: “Neither this Agreement nor the licenses granted hereunder are assignable or transferable by Licensee without the prior written consent of Company”, adding that “any attempt to do so will be void.”

Together these mean a used or already-activated Sapphire key is not something you can safely buy from a stranger. The only clean license is a new key, bought from Boris FX or one of its resellers and never activated before. It also means you should settle the host before you pay, because you cannot resell a key bought for the wrong one. Boris FX's terms do mention crossgrade purchases, which need your existing serial number at checkout, so ask Boris FX sales if your host changes later.

Free routes to try first

These cost nothing beyond the license itself. Try them in this order.

  1. Run the free trial in your own host. Download the Boris FX Hub and install Sapphire. Boris FX says it then runs “in a fully functional watermarked trial”. Test it in the host you will actually use, which also confirms which edition you need.
  2. Buy in the Boris FX store. The Boris FX store sells all three editions. Its terms say prices are shown without taxes, which are calculated at checkout from your billing address. Boris FX also describes “a 15-day 100% money-back guarantee on all our products, including both subscriptions and perpetual licenses”: you request it with a form within 15 days of purchase, and the refund can take up to 21 business days to reach you.
  3. Ask a reseller from Boris FX's own list. Boris FX's Find A Reseller page lists resellers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Australia; Toolfarm in California is one of them. Each reseller runs its own checkout and payment methods, so ask before you order, and ask what refund terms apply.
  4. Write to Boris FX sales. The Sapphire page and the help centre give sales@borisfx.com as the sales contact. Ask which payment methods are possible for your order.
Use your real billing details Boris FX calculates taxes from your billing address. Do not use a VPN or another country's details to reach a different store or price.

Avoid “lifetime license” sites

You may come across sites selling Sapphire “lifetime licenses” far below Boris FX's price. Signs that a seller is not offering a genuine license:

  • It promises lifetime updates. A genuine perpetual license includes 12 months of upgrades and support; later updates need the paid plan.
  • The seller is not on Boris FX's reseller list and the price is far below Boris FX's own.
  • The key is “pre-activated” or used. Section 10 of the license agreement voids transfers made without Boris FX's written consent.
  • It sends its own installer, a patch or a license file. Sapphire installs through the Boris FX Hub or the Boris FX installer and activates with a key; anything else is a crack and a malware risk.

Does Boris FX accept crypto for Sapphire?

We found no crypto option on borisfx.com or in the Boris FX help centre. You can buy from the Boris FX store, from a reseller on Boris FX's list or through Boris FX sales. Resellers set their own payment methods, so ask the one you want to use.

Which Sapphire edition do I need?

Adobe/OFX if you work in After Effects, Premiere Pro or an OFX host such as DaVinci Resolve, Nuke, Flame, Fusion Studio or VEGAS Pro. Avid if you work only in Avid Media Composer. Multi-host if you work in Avid and also in Adobe or OFX hosts.

Can I move Sapphire to a new computer?

Yes. A nodelocked license is active on one computer at a time. Deactivate it on the old computer, then activate it on the new one. You can install Sapphire on as many computers as you like.

Can I buy a used Sapphire license?

Not without Boris FX's consent. Section 10 of the Boris FX license agreement says the licenses are not assignable or transferable without the company's prior written consent, and any attempt to do so is void. Buy a new, never-activated key instead.

What happens after the 12 months of upgrades?

The perpetual license keeps working. Boris FX says perpetual licenses remain fully functional after the Upgrade and Support Plan expires. To get later Sapphire updates, you renew the plan with Boris FX.
