What a declined card or an 'unpaid' order means

Image-Line does not handle card payments itself. Its knowledge base explains that it uses “third party payment partners in our webshop to handle these payments (e.g. PayPal, Stripe)”, and its page on payment partners names three: Stripe, Verifone (2Checkout) and PayPal. At the end of checkout you are sent to one of them to enter your card, and that partner approves or refuses the payment.

This is why Image-Line cannot tell you what went wrong. In its own words: “The problem is that we have no idea or information on why the transaction was declined. Our payment partner makes this decision without our involvement.” There is no Image-Line error code to look up. What you usually see is an order in your Image-Line account with the status 'unpaid'.

Image-Line's answer on unpaid orders says four useful things:

  • Allow the system up to 30 minutes to process a payment, and refresh the page in the meantime.
  • An order that is still 'unpaid' after that “indicates the bank or payment partner declined the purchase”.
  • You are not charged: Image-Line cannot request money from your card or bank account on its own.
  • Unpaid orders are cancelled automatically after a set time. Image-Line calls them “dead transactions” and says they should not stop you from ordering again.

Image-Line's site says FL Studio “is built by Image‑Line in Belgium”. That is why, for a card issued outside Europe, the first thing Image-Line asks you to check with your bank is whether the card allows overseas payments to Europe.

Free fixes to try first

These steps come from Image-Line's knowledge base. Try them in this order.

  1. Wait up to 30 minutes and refresh the order. Image-Line asks you to give the payment that long before you buy again. If the order is still 'unpaid' after 30 minutes, the payment failed.
  2. Ask your card issuer two questions. Image-Line asks you to check whether your card is allowed “to be used for internet payments” and “to make overseas payments (to Europe)”. If either is blocked, ask the bank to allow it; the bank can also tell you why the payment was refused.
  3. Pay with your card through PayPal, without a PayPal account. At checkout, choose PayPal if it is offered in your country. Image-Line says you can pay by card there without creating an account, and that “sometimes another payment partner will accept your credit card”.
  4. Look for other methods in your region. Image-Line says the payment methods shown at checkout depend on your location. Choose Other to open a menu with more choices, or add FL Studio to the cart and go on to the payment step to see the full list for your country.
  5. Try a different card. If PayPal does not accept your card either, Image-Line suggests trying another card if you have one.
  6. Ask the payment partner. Image-Line suggests contacting the support team of the partner that handled your attempt (Stripe, Verifone or PayPal) or your own card provider to find out why the payment was declined.
Keep your real billing country Your billing details must match your card and your bank's records. Do not use a VPN or enter another country to get around a decline.

Why a used FL Studio license is not a way out

When the card keeps failing, marketplace listings for FL Studio look tempting. Image-Line's terms exclude them. Its knowledge base says: “We do not allow license transfers between customers (see Terms of Use). This means that selling, purchasing, gifting or receiving FL Studio as second hand is forbidden.” Another answer points to section 11 of the end user license agreement, which does not allow license transfers.

Image-Line names only two official sources: its own website and the licensed distributors on its distributors and resellers page. It warns that buying through G2A, eBay, Craigslist or other auction sites risks software that is “illegal, pirated, already registered or non-functional”, and lists what can follow: a license that does not work, permanent loss of access to your account, no customer support and no Lifetime Free Updates.

The legitimate way to have someone else pay is Image-Line's own gifting method. Its knowledge base itself suggests asking friends or family to order for you, and its gift page, which now opens with “GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE”, explains how to gift FL Studio without a certificate. The buyer is told to “Create a new account using the recipient's name when prompted during the purchase process.” They use their own temporary email and password, complete the purchase, then change the account's email and password to the recipient's. Because the license is bought new on an account in the recipient's name, no license moves between customers.

Buy it with crypto through Unboxkey

If Image-Line's webshop still declines your card, we can buy FL Studio for you. You pay in crypto and give your full name at checkout. Since gift certificates are paused, we follow Image-Line's gifting steps: we create a new Image-Line account in your name with a temporary email and password, buy your edition on it in Image-Line's webshop, then change the account email to yours and you set your own password. You then sign in and install FL Studio; Lifetime Free Updates are included. The full process is on our How it works page, and the coins and networks we accept are on How to pay.

FAQ

My FL Studio order says 'unpaid'. Was I charged?

No. Image-Line says an order stays 'unpaid' when the bank or payment partner declined the purchase, and that you are not charged. The system cancels unpaid orders automatically after a set time, you do not need to contact Image-Line, and you can order again even while the unpaid order is still listed.

Why can't Image-Line tell me why my card was declined?

Image-Line does not process cards itself. Its payment partners, Stripe, Verifone (2Checkout) and PayPal, decide on each payment, and Image-Line says it has no information on why a transaction was declined. Your card issuer or the payment partner's support team can tell you the reason.

Which payment methods can I use in Image-Line's webshop?

It depends on your location. Image-Line says the methods shown at checkout are tailored to your region and that not every option is available in every country. Choose Other at checkout to see more choices, or add FL Studio to the cart and go to the payment step to see the full list for your country.

Can I buy a used FL Studio license instead?

No. Image-Line does not allow license transfers between customers and says that selling, purchasing, gifting or receiving FL Studio second hand is forbidden. If you buy an already registered license, Image-Line will not move the registration to your account.

Can someone else still buy FL Studio for me?

Yes, but not with a gift certificate for now: Image-Line's gift page says gift certificates are temporarily unavailable. Instead, the buyer creates a new account using your name during the purchase, with their own temporary email and password, completes the purchase, and then changes the account's email and password to yours. The license is new and sits on an account in your name from the start.
