First check: you may already own Serum 2
Xfer's product page asks “Did we mention that Serum 2 is a free upgrade for Serum 1 owners?”, and its upgrade FAQ spells out who qualifies:
- anyone who bought Serum 1 directly from Xfer Records or from a reseller, and
- anyone who rented Serum 1 through Splice Rent-to-Own.
Your old Serum 1 serial will not activate Serum 2: Xfer has you open Serum 2 in your DAW and log in with your xferrecords.com account.
Forgot which email you used? Xfer has a webform for that and suggests finding the original transaction on your card or PayPal statement. If you lost access to that email, a second form moves the account to a new address, provided you have an order confirmation number.
The two official ways to buy Serum 2
Xfer Records' shop. The Serum 2 page on xferrecords.com has a single “Buy Now” button with the price in US dollars. Serum 2 is a digital download, and Xfer promises that “lifetime free updates actually means lifetime free updates.” A demo for Windows and macOS is limited to 15 minutes, so you can test the sound before you pay.
Xfer's product page does not list payment methods. Its order-help article, though, finds purchases by “your credit card or PayPal statement”, so card and PayPal are the two ways people pay.
Splice Rent-to-Own. Splice lists Serum 2 at $9.99 a month for 25 months, with a 3-day free trial. After the 25th payment the plugin is yours to keep, with a lifetime license. Splice's help centre says it accepts credit and debit cards from the major networks, and PayPal only with a linked card, since “paying directly through a Paypal balance is not supported.” It does not take bank transfers, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Why naira cards fail on Xfer's checkout
Xfer prices Serum 2 in US dollars and Splice lists its plan in dollars too, so a Serum order from a naira card is a foreign online payment. Two decisions sit with your bank, not with Xfer or Splice:
- whether the card may be used for international web payments at all, and
- how much the card may spend abroad over a month or quarter.
Nigerian banks set these limits themselves and change them from time to time, so the only figure that counts is the one your bank shows for your card, in its app or from customer care. If the price is above that limit, retrying will not help.
PayPal does not get around this. Its Nigeria site lets you store debit and credit cards and pay with PayPal at checkout, but PayPal then charges the stored card, so the same bank limit applies.
Free fixes to try first
- Turn on international online payments for your card. In your bank app or with customer care, enable foreign web transactions and ask for the card's current international spending limit. If the limit is below the Serum price, ask whether it can be raised for this purchase.
- Pay with a dollar card if you have a domiciliary account. Ask your bank whether it issues a debit card for your USD domiciliary account, how you fund it, and what it allows for online payments. A card that spends dollars you already hold is not bound by your naira card's foreign limit, though the bank can set its own rules on it.
- Try PayPal, or a second card that works abroad. If your bank allows the payment but the checkout still refuses the card, store the card in PayPal and choose PayPal at checkout. A different processor sometimes accepts what the first refused.
- Use Splice Rent-to-Own if a monthly charge fits your limit. A $9.99 monthly charge fits a tight international limit far more easily than the full price. Two conditions: the card has to work every month for 25 months, and the Splice desktop app must be opened at least once every three days while you rent. You can pay off the balance early.
- Ask someone you trust abroad to buy it as a gift. Xfer's own gifting steps: the buyer signs up on xferrecords.com, buys Serum as if for themselves, then changes the account's email and password to yours on the “your account” page. The account and the license then belong to you.
The same bank rules apply to other music software. For Image-Line's checkout, see How to buy FL Studio in Nigeria when your card is declined.
Skip cracked and “activation” listings
If you come across cheap “activation”, “lifetime” or shared-login offers for Serum on a marketplace or social media, keep in mind that none of these sellers is Xfer or Splice.
Xfer's authorization article shows why they do not work as a license. Serum 2 is activated by logging in to the plugin with xferrecords.com credentials, and Serum 1 serials do not activate it. So a “Serum 2 key” is not something Xfer's activation uses, and a shared login stays under the seller's control: they can change the password or remove your computer from the account at any time. A cracked copy is not a license at all. To try Serum first, use the free 15-minute demo.
Buy it with crypto through Unboxkey
If no card works, we can buy Serum 2 for you. You pay us in crypto, USDT first (other coins are on How to pay). We create a new Xfer Records account for you, buy Serum 2 on it from Xfer, change the account email to yours, and you set your own password: the steps Xfer describes for gifting Serum. After the handover we keep no access, and the license with its lifetime free updates is yours.
Serum 2 has no transferable key, so this handover is the only delivery method. If you already own Serum 1, you do not need us. How it works walks through an order step by step.
Serum 2
$261.45total, fee included
- On your account: bought on a new Xfer Records account made for you; we then change its email to yours and you set your own password. Lifetime free updates.
- Typically within 2 hours of payment confirmation (09:00–21:00 UTC), at most 24 hours
If we can't buy your license, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, with no deductions.
FAQ
I own Serum 1. Do I have to buy Serum 2?
No. Xfer Records says Serum 2 is a free upgrade for anyone who bought Serum 1 from Xfer or a reseller, and for anyone who rented Serum 1 through Splice Rent-to-Own. Your old Serum 1 serial will not activate Serum 2; you log in to the plugin with your xferrecords.com account instead.
Can I pay for Serum in naira?
Xfer's product page lists the price in US dollars, so a naira card is charged as a foreign online payment. Whether it goes through depends on your bank: the card must be enabled for international web payments, and the amount must fit inside its current foreign-spending limit.
How does Splice Rent-to-Own work for Serum 2?
Splice lists Serum 2 at $9.99 a month for 25 months, with a 3-day free trial; after the last payment the plugin is yours to keep. You can pay off the balance early. While renting, you must open the Splice desktop app at least once every three days. Splice takes credit and debit cards, or PayPal with a linked card.
Is it allowed to get Serum on an account someone else set up for me?
Yes. It is the method Xfer itself describes for gifting Serum: the buyer signs up on xferrecords.com, buys Serum, then changes the account's email address and password to the recipient's so the recipient can log in.
What do I get if I buy Serum 2 through Unboxkey?
A new Xfer Records account with Serum 2 on it, created for you. We change the account email to yours and you set your own password, so the license and its lifetime free updates are yours. You pay in USDT or another listed coin, and if we can't buy your license, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, with no deductions.
