Why a JetBrains payment fails
JetBrains keeps a sales help article, "Why was my credit card rejected?", last edited on 13 August 2026. It does not quote one specific error message, so the wording you see at checkout can differ. It does list the causes, and almost all of them sit between your card and your bank, not in your JetBrains account.
| Cause JetBrains lists | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Card expired | The card must be active. A card saved for auto-renewal can be replaced in your JetBrains Account. |
| Billing address doesn't match | The address you enter at checkout must match your card's address. If you can't change the saved address at checkout, JetBrains asks you to contact its sales support. |
| Insufficient funds or limit reached | The amount must fit your balance and your card's limit. |
| No 3D Secure | "European regulations require 3D Secure for online card payments." If your card isn't enabled for it, the payment provider may block the transaction. |
| International payments not allowed | "Depending on your location, a payment provider from another country may process your transaction." Your card must allow international transactions. |
| Wrong American Express code | Use the 4-digit code on the front of the card, not the numbers on the back. |
| One-time code problems | The code sent to your phone comes from your bank's fraud check, to the number the bank has on file. Your card issuer fixes delivery problems. |
| VPN, or paying while abroad | JetBrains suggests disabling the VPN and repeating the payment. If you are temporarily in another country, contact JetBrains. |
| Sanctions | JetBrains cannot accept payments from individuals or organizations under sanctions, or from territories restricted by the EU, UN or US. This is a legal rule, and no payment fix changes it. |
One check tells you a lot. Look at your banking app or call the bank and ask whether a JetBrains attempt reached them. JetBrains puts it this way: "If your card issuer has no pending transactions from JetBrains, it means the payment was blocked before it even reached them. This often happens if 3D Secure isn’t enabled." A declined attempt the bank can see points to limits or fraud rules; no attempt at all points to 3D Secure or the browser redirect.
If an auto-renewal failed
A failed renewal works differently from a failed first purchase. JetBrains says: "The system won’t retry the charge automatically, even if you update your payment details." Fixing the card alone is not enough; you have to renew.
- You have 7 days. When a saved card doesn't go through on the renewal date, JetBrains keeps the subscription active for 7 more days and emails you a link to renew it manually.
- Renew from that email, or renew an expired subscription directly in your JetBrains Account.
- Swap the card for next year. In your JetBrains Account, open Payment Methods, click Remove credit card (or Remove PayPal), choose "Replace the removed card with a new payment method", pick or add the new method and click Confirm. Every subscription linked to the old method moves to the new one.
Free fixes to try first
Work down the list. Each step comes from JetBrains' own help pages, and none of them costs anything.
- Place the order again. JetBrains says placing the order again may help on its own.
- Check the card itself. Not expired, enough funds, and the amount within your card's limit.
- Type the billing address exactly as your bank has it. Same street, postcode and country as on your card statement.
- Ask your bank to enable 3D Secure and international online payments. Both are listed causes, and only the card issuer can switch them on. While you are on the phone, ask whether they saw the JetBrains attempt.
- Clear the cache, or use a private window or another browser. JetBrains notes that cache, cookies, security settings or network issues can stop the checkout from redirecting to your bank's 3D Secure page. Clearing cache and cookies, private mode, or another browser or computer can fix it.
- Turn off a VPN and repeat the payment. This is JetBrains' own advice for errors while using a VPN.
- Pay with PayPal. JetBrains confirms: "Yes, you can use PayPal when placing your order online on our website."
- Buy through an authorized reseller in your country. JetBrains lists authorized resellers as the alternative when an online order fails. It covers annual subscriptions, personal and commercial; personal subscriptions through resellers aren't available in the United States.
- For a company: ask for a proforma invoice. Organizations can pay by purchase order, and businesses buying annual subscriptions can pay a proforma or purchase invoice by wire transfer.
Pay with crypto through Unboxkey
If none of the fixes work, or you would rather not pay by card, Unboxkey can buy the subscription for you. Unboxkey is an independent service, not affiliated with JetBrains and not a JetBrains reseller itself. You pay us in USDT or another listed coin, and we order the license from an authorized JetBrains reseller, the purchasing option JetBrains points to when an online order fails.
- Your name and email on the order. The reseller order is placed for you as the licensee, not for us. JetBrains says: "You’ll get your license certificate from your reseller. We'll send the certificate to your reseller electronically, and they’ll pass it along to you."
- The subscription goes to your own JetBrains Account. Open the link in the license certificate email, add the subscription to your account and sign in to the IDE with it. JetBrains' agreement for individual customers "applies whether you purchase a Subscription directly from JetBrains or through an authorized JetBrains reseller or distributor."
- Personal or Organization edition. "Personal licenses are for individuals who pay for them with their own funds." JetBrains adds that you "can’t share, transfer, or reassign" one, and that "Businesses can’t buy or cover the cost of personal licenses." If your employer pays or reimburses you, choose the Organization edition.
The same limits apply to orders through us. Personal subscriptions through resellers aren't available in the United States, so we can't order a Personal edition for a customer there. JetBrains doesn't sell to the sanctioned territories in the table above, and it suspended sales in Russia and Belarus in March 2022; no payment method changes that.
Choose the All Products Pack if you use several IDEs, or a single IDE: IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Pro, GoLand, PhpStorm, Rider, CLion, DataGrip or RubyMine. Buy a JetBrains license with crypto compares them and explains the perpetual fallback license, and How to pay lists every coin and network.

FAQ
Why does my bank show no pending charge from JetBrains?
JetBrains says that if your card issuer has no pending transaction from JetBrains, the payment was blocked before it reached the bank, often because 3D Secure isn't enabled. Ask your bank to enable 3D Secure for online payments, then try again in a private window so the checkout can redirect you to your bank's check.
Will JetBrains retry a failed renewal payment?
No. JetBrains won't retry the charge automatically, even if you update your payment details. Renew from the link in the email JetBrains sent after the failed attempt, or in your JetBrains Account. After a failed renewal, JetBrains keeps the subscription active for 7 more days.
Can I pay JetBrains with PayPal?
Yes. JetBrains says you can use PayPal when you place an order online on its website, and you can also name PayPal as the preferred payment method for a purchase order or proforma invoice.
Can I buy JetBrains through a reseller instead?
Yes, through an authorized JetBrains reseller in your country. JetBrains says this works for annual subscriptions, both personal and commercial, but personal subscriptions through resellers aren't available in the United States.
Does Unboxkey sell JetBrains licenses?
Yes. You pay in USDT or another listed coin, and we order a Personal or Organization subscription from an authorized JetBrains reseller with your name and email on the order. You add it to your own JetBrains Account from the license certificate email. Personal editions are for private individuals and aren't available to customers in the United States, and JetBrains doesn't sell to sanctioned territories.
